Vincenzo Vona<\/strong> Fri. 31 at 14.00 The magic of major scales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this engaging workshop you will have the opportunity to explore the sweetness and power of major scales through music.  Using a famous piece as an example, you will witness the transformation of a simple scale into a beautiful melody.  We will have the opportunity to play together the key elements of a song: harmony, melody and rhythm.  The teacher’s task will be to encourage collaboration and communication between participants, using the unique qualities of the ukulele to stimulate musical connection and guide them towards maximum expressive potential.  This workshop is recommended for anyone who wants an engaging and rewarding musical learning experience. For this workshop George will introduce the classic ukulele tune ’12th Street Rag’, including all of the fun and unique strumming techniques you add to make it sound awesome! George will start with a basic version of the main section of the song, and throughout the class he will add more techniques and variations of the song that the student can add depending on his\/her level. Featuring the song \u201cThe Summer Wind\u201d made famous by Frank Sinatra, the piece has some lovely descending chords and a very catchy melody line. I have substituted a few of the chords to add a bit more spice, but not beyond the capability of an intermediate player. As the piece progresses, I change up from the original key and bring in vocal harmony. The combination sounds awesome and perfect for those who like to both sing and play in a group setting. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This workshop is aimed at players who want to start improvising. You will learn how to improvise a simple, yet, effective solo using the minor pentatonic scale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need prior knowledge of scales or improvisation as we will start from scratch. However, knowing how to read simple tabs will help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the workshop, you will learn how to structure a solo effectively and how to improvise over simple chord progressions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Flipping through the pages of the most known early methods for ukulele, both Hawaiians and Americans, it will be offered an overview of various and alternative strumming techniques, as described and realized in the first half of the 20th century. These will be practiced on tunes taken from solo and accompanying repertoire. The workshop is aimed at intermediate ukulele players looking for confirmations, new ideas and challenges for developing their arrangements and technique.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Cathy Fink<\/strong> Sat. 1 at 15.00 Clawhammer Ukulele<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cathy Fink is one of the premiere clawhammer style ukulele and banjo players in the world. This Appalachian banjo style that easily adapts to a high G ukulele, using the high G as a drone string. Clawhammer style involves playing the strings in a down-picking motion only. It is sometimes best used with unique tunings of the strings. Cathy will teach this right hand technique and get you started with an easy tune and song. Here is an example called \u201cCider Mill\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Francesco Verginelli<\/strong> Sun. 2 at 11.00 Exploring Ukulele Acoustics: Understanding Your Instrument<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop aims to deepen participants\u2019 understanding of their ukulele by exploring its fundamental concepts. Some rudiments of acoustics will be introduced to explore and understand the fundamental elements of the ukulele: the strings, the bridge, the soundboard, and the sound holes. We will discuss the balance between rigidity and weight, the role of thicknesses and bracing, as well as sound in terms of volume and projection, the intonation of the fretboard referred to the equal temperament tuning system, and the importance of compensation. The session will conclude by explaining how to perform an intonation test.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
